Marmo Park is a vital resource for Emsworth families and the community. With upcoming construction plans and budgets being affected by increasingly uncertain supply costs the issue should be a central focus of the Borough Government. For Emsworth families the park is where our children play and where we have birthday and graduation parties. For others it is where they exercise or play pickleball or basketball. For all of us it is a peaceful corner of our town in which we can enjoy a nice day outside.
The reality of a Borough this size is that the community will need to come together and volunteer to help keep it clean and do some of the work to assist our Public Works Department. I would like to create a community organization, Friends of Marmo Park, that helps organize volunteers at the park to ensure that we get the best each day out of our community’s resources.
Messes will be made and things will be left behind and while these minor details are important to keeping up a standard they are nowhere near being the responsibility of the Public Works Department.
As Mayor I could better coordinate with the Borough and Public Works to ensure that the park is at its best each day for the citizens of Emsworth.
Along with community partners we could have summer events on main street to showcase our local businesses and organizations. A summer event could become a great tradition that brings the better community and makes lifelong memories for families.
The Emsworth Firefighters are the heart of our community and are the backbone of each of our borough events and traditions. Perhaps a way to repay them is to make this summer event a celebration of our firefighters in which the town makes the hot dogs for the firefighters and the town shows that best of what it has to offer.
A town fundraiser event for the fire department would be a wonderful way for citizens to give back to the heart of our community, the Emsworth Volunteer Fire Company.
We should invite food trucks to come to the park or borough building during the summer months. We could sit and have lunch with our kids and neighbors at picnic tables and get to know each other better.
Vinegar Hollow is a wonderful refuge from the stress of daily life. Renovations to Vinegar Hollow by the Hollow Oak Land Trust have been overwhelmingly positive. However a recent event in which teenagers in Ben Avon started a petition asking the Land Trust to reinstall bike jumps that had been there for many years illustrates an excellent point.
We must have open and honest communication with the Land Trust about issues like this.
In a time when kids are focused on screen time we must do our best to ensure that our natural lands are a place where kids can safely explore nature and experience the peaceful nature that comes with a hike in the woods. As Mayor I would gladly work with the Land Trust to make Vinegar Hollow an important part of the lives of Emsworth citizens for decades to come.
